William Spengler, convicted killer who spent 18 years in prison for beating his grandmother to death with a hammer, left behind a chilling note before committing these his final murders.
William Spengler purposely set fire to his car and home on the sleepy Lake Side street in Webster, New York. After which he hid in a ditch and waited for first-responders to arrive. When they did, he shot and injured two firefighters and an off-duty police officer at the scene. William ended up killing 2 firefighters.
The two firefighters killed were Lt. Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka. The two injured were Joseph Hofsetter who was shot once and sustained an injury to his pelvis. The second, Theodore Scardino, who was shot twice and received injuries to his left shoulder and left lung, as well as a knee.
William was found to be armed with not only the assault rifle but a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver and a Mossman 12-gauge shotgun and a Bushmaster Semi-Automatic Assault rifle, the same type of Assault weapon used in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting..
A chilling note was left behind by the killer. The 67 year-old William Spengler wanted to see “how much of the neighborhood I can burn down” and that he wanted to “do what I like doing best, killing people,”.
