Disturbing video taken during the protests in Union Square, show what appears to be an NYPD police officer using the “White Power” hand gesture.
Many will discount the hand gesture known to most as the symbol for “Okay”, but the symbol has since been used by many known white supremacist.
The symbol has been used so much by known racists that the ‘Okay hand gesture’ has since been labeled a hate symbol by Anti-Defamation League. According to the ADL, the okay hand gesture is when ” the thumb and index finger touch while the other fingers of the hand are held outstretched.”
The symbol’s meaning is believed to have changed back in 2017 through an effort by members of 4Chan called “Operation O-KKK”.
Although many people today still use the hand gesture to express approval, The ADL says the hoax was so successful that white supremacists began using the symbol in racist/trolling internet posts, thus making into an actual symbol of hate.
