She said she never worried about him jogging because he wasn’t bothering anyone.Wanda Cooper, left, and attorney Lee Merritt speak with CNN's Don Lemon on Sunday, May 3, 2020. The attorney for Ahmaud’s family Lee Merritt says Gregory and Travis McMichael are now saying they were trying to stop a crime. However according to the attorney, “The only thing they have ever said is … that Ahmaud stopped by a house that was under construction and he looked through the window. We don’t know if that happened or not, but even if that did happen that is not a felony that would invoke the citizen’s arrest statute that would make this allowable.”

After the shooting, Gregory McMichael told police he saw Ahmaud on a seperate evening and that he stuck his hand down his pants on that occasion, leading McMichael to believe he was armed.

When Gregory McMichael saw Arbery jogging, he got his son Travis, saying, “Travis, the guy is running down the street, let’s go,” The two grabbed a shotgun and a pistol and followed Arbery in their truck. “Stop, stop, we want to talk to you,” Gregory McMichael shouted at Arbery, according to the police report. Travis McMichael then exited truck with the shotgun.

Gregory told officers Arbery “violently attacked” his son, and they struggled over the gun. Travis McMichael fired two shots and killed Arbery.

One District Attorney wrote that Travis McMichael acted out of self-defense and their actions fall within Georgia’s citizen arrest laws.

  1. Georgia has to be a state of scum to tolerate people coming up on a jogger and accosting him and murdering him. This is not only incomprehensible, but even more so, that the State does not step in, throw these white racist VERMIN into prison and throw away the key until they can be trialed and put away for life. They are a danger to all of society, that they would THINK they can finger some young kid and just murder him. I am so ashamed of my race that there would be this level of BARBARISM in the UNITED STATE OF AMERICA. It is no wonder we are dealing with this horrible pestilence. It is because of hateful, DISGUSTING BARBARIANS like these murderers of the future of our nation, its young people!!!!!
