Banksy’s ‘Girl With Balloon’ Piece self-destructs in shredder seconds after selling for £1m
A room of people with way too much money got the surprise of their life when an auctioned painting was destroyed seconds after selling for over 1-million dollars.
Banksy who’s The framed Girl With Balloon, one of the artist’s best known works, was auctioned by Sotheby’s in London. Just seconds after the piece was sold, the painting which had a secret shredder built inside began destroying the painting.
Banksy wrote: “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge – Picasso.”
In 2017, ‘Girl With Balloon’, which originally appeared on a wall in Great Eastern Street, London, was voted the nation’s favorite artwork.
Sotheby’s has not revealed who bought the piece before it was shredded.
At the moment it is unclear whether their contract still stands.
The prank could have actually caused the artwork to increase in value.
However, others have questioned whether the buyer would still have to pay for it.
Banksy is an anonymous England-based street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique.
