An undocumented Malian is being hailed a hero after he is recorded climbing a Paris building balcony to save a young child who is hanging on for dear life.

The amazing video shows Mamoudou Gassama without hesitation, scaling 4-stories to save a child hanging from the fourth floor.

Mamoudou Gassama, 22 years old, said. “I saw a lot of people screaming, and cars honking,” he said.

“Thank God, I saved him”

“I climbed like this and, thank God, I saved it.” “I was scared when I saved the child and then we went into the living room, I started shaking, I could not hold on my feet, I had to sit down”, he added, moved.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the child found himself alone on the balcony in the absence of parents at home.

Firefighters are alerted by passersby around 8 pm, who saw a child hanging on the fourth floor of a building in the north of the French capital. “Luckily, there was someone who was physically fit and had the courage to pick up the child,” said the firefighters.

Political reactions praising the young rescuer’s courage did not take long Sunday. “Congratulations to Mamoudou Gassama for his act of bravery” responded on Twitter the socialist mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, who spoke with him on the phone “to thank him warmly”.

“He explained to me that he arrived from Mali a few months ago dreaming of building his life here. I replied that his heroic gesture is an example for all citizens and that the City of Paris will obviously be keen to support him in his efforts to settle in France, “she added.

Shortly after the events, the father of the child, born in 1981 and without a judicial record, was placed in custody for leaving his child unattended, according to judicial sources.

He was to be brought to the Paris court Sunday in the evening for prosecution.

The child was placed in a reception facility. His mother was not in Paris at the time of the facts.
