LOOK: Wal-Mart Brand ‘Great Value’ Ice Cream Sandwich Does Not Melt

Ice Cream Sandwiches have become really popular over the past week but it’s not because they are a great way to cool down during the summer as one mother found out.

While in her backyard on a hot day, Christie Watson noticed an uneaten Ice Cream Sandwich sitting on her table. Watkins was stunned to find that after 12 hours in 80-degree weather, the Wal-Mart Brand ‘Great Value’ Ice Cream Sandwich did not melt. Watkins then left another ice cream sandwich out in the sun which yielded the same results.

WCPO conducted an experiment where they grabbed a Walmart Great Value sandwich, a Klondike Bar sandwich, and a cup of Haagen Dazs and left them in the hot sun for 30 minutes.

The Haagen Dazs melted quickly into a puddle.
The Klondike sandwich melted to a fair extent.
The Walmart sandwich, though it melted a bit, remained the most solid in appearance, and still looked like a sandwich.

Wal-Mart released a statement explaining:

“Ice cream melts based on the ingredients including cream.

Ice cream with more cream (sic) will generally melt at a slower rate, which is the case with our Great Value ice cream sandwiches.

In the frozen aisles, Great Value ice cream sandwiches are one of the top sellers, and we are glad to be able to offer a great treat that families love.”

According to reports, sources in the dairy business say that adding gums and emulsifiers will slow the melt rate. The listed ingredients for Walmart’s Great Value Ice Cream Sandwich include: corn syrup, guar gum, and cellulose gum.

Dan Collins of KIKN 100.5 in Sioux Falls heard about Watkins’ story and tried out the experiment on his own and found that even after 75 minutes in the sun, the Wal-Mart brand Ice-Cream sandwich had barely melted.
