Four would be criminals found themselves to be the victims after they tried breaking into an MMA fighter’s home with the confrontation turning deadly for one.
Sal Garces, 25, his brother Raymond, 19, Nathan Avalos, 20 and Leonard Calvillo, 22 tried breaking into a mobile home in Las Cruces, New Mexico but unfortunately for them, the home belonged to Mixed Martial Arts fighter Joseph Torrez.
The men were reported to have had an ongoing feud with the 27-year-old MMA fighter. Leonard Calvillo is believed to have threatened Torrez on the phone before showing up at his home on New Years Day. “I’ll kill you and your family … I’ll go to your house,” Calvillo reportedly said.
Torrez’s fiancee, son and the fiancee’s sister were all home at the time of the attempted B&E. Torrez’s fiance tried to keep the men from entering the home but could not as they busted through the door.
It was then that Torrez sprung into action protecting his family. Using a shank brought by one of the attackers, Torrez stabbed Sal Garces to death. Torrez also severely injured the face of Avalos who had to be taken to the hospital via an ambulance. Calvillo and Raymond Garces ran away but were later arrested on charges of conspiracy and property damage.
Even thought Torrez was protecting his family, his attorney explains Torrez could still face charges in the death of Sal Garces. Torrez has since stopped cooperating with authorities.
