Academy Award winning actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York City apartment after what is believed to have been an apparent drug overdose.

Hoffman’s family released a statement regarding his death:

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.”

When Hoffman didn’t arrive to pick up his children, friend and Playwright David Katz is believed to have searched for him and made the initial discovery. Police say Huffman was found dead in his bathroom with a needle sticking from his arm. 10 glassine envelopes with 2 of the envelopes being filled with heroin were found by the police.

Hoffman leaves behind three children, Tallulah Hoffman, Cooper Alexander Hoffman and Willa Hoffman, all under the age of 11, with costume designer Mimi O’Donnell whom he was never married to. Hoffman was 46 years old.
